TRAVEL: New York is safe

Posted on December 30, 2006. Filed under: Visual FoxPro |

One of the things that pleasantly surprised us about New York last week, is how safe you feel. If you are like me (ie ill-informed most of the time {g}) and haven’t been to New York recently, then you probably still have visions of the crime ridded New York of a decade ago. Well that has drastically changed ofcourse in the last 8-10 years (and long before 9/11 in case you might have thought that was the catalyst). The reason I mention this is because a number of family and friends warned us about being careful in New York (ie they had the same incorrect impression I did).

So, to be clear: New York is incredibly safe – there is a very strong police presence all over Manhattan, and we didn’t have a single issue (nothing even remotely worrying) the whole time – even though we were returning home on the subway and walking around dark streets late at night on a number of occasions.

(Note: our New York experience is limited to Manhattan island only)

TRAVEL: Make sure you get Sydney right

Posted on December 30, 2006. Filed under: Visual FoxPro |

Whilst this news story (here) sounds a little bit suspicious (it is too early to check it on Snopes yet), it does raise an important point… if you are coming to OzFox 2007 from overseas, make sure you end up in Sydney (Australia) not those other differently spelled cities that sound similar.

PERSONAL: Back from New York

Posted on December 28, 2006. Filed under: Visual FoxPro |

Michele and I managed to get away to New York for a few days last week. It was our first time there, and we were totally blown away. What a fantastic, vibrant, busy, diverse, over-the-top city. Michele wants to move there.

We only had time to spend 4 days in Manhatten, but we crammed in as many sight-seeing events as possible.

We returned to Minneapolis at 10pm on Christmas Eve, just in time to get home and view the huge pile of presents Santa was leaving for Jemma (our 2 and 1/2 year old niece). Christmas Day was great, and Boxing Day (the day after Christmas) was a very relaxing unwind.

And the best part of all, was logging in to work on Wednesday and finding that there weren’t many emails waiting (everything has slowed right down over the holiday season).

More updates in the next few days.

VFP: New OzFox 2007 site + extended special price

Posted on December 7, 2006. Filed under: Visual FoxPro |

We’ve updated the OzFox 2007 site (check it out here) – hope you like it.

There’s a few more details appearing about sessions (try here), and an enhanced call for local speakers (here) with the prize being a free registration to OzFox!

You can also subscribe to the OzFox newsletter (I’ll be sending that out later), but if you’ve attended previously (or shown interest) then I’ll have you on the newsletter list anyway.

Best of all is the extended Opening month special (register here) until 17 December 2006.

(And to those of you registered in November – there’s a special extra benefit coming your way. Why? Because we want to reward you for registering early – it can be annoying when you make the effort to register before the deadline and then the event organisers extend the deadline! So we want to thank you for registering early.)

And if you are keen to help promote OzFox then plese consider putting one of these logos (here) on your web site or blog.

I'll be at OzFox 2007 I'll be at OzFox 2007

I'll be at OzFox 2007 I'll be at OzFox 2007

Got a question or suggestion? Please drop me a comment.

SOFTWARE: Office 2007 Upgrade stumbles

Posted on December 2, 2006. Filed under: Visual FoxPro |

So, I ‘finally’ {g} upgraded to Office 2007. Nothing particularly interesting about that, except to say that I too am indebted to Scott Hanselman (along with many thousands around the globe…)

I experienced the dreaded ‘…cannot upgrade from a prerelease version of 2007 Microsoft Office system…’ message.

But Scott guided me through it all with his great post here. And yes, MyUnistaller is a fantastic utility.

(As an aside I’ve never installed any Microsoft Expression betas, so that isn’t the culprit.)

And, unlike Craig I didn’t need to reboot at the end of the Office install. But after running Outlook it did prompt me to install the latest Microsoft Desktop Search, and that did require a reboot.
